FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. WHAT WILL my PARTICIPATION in this study LOOK LIKE?

If you are eligible to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete an in-person experimental session. During the session, you complete a series of short cognitive assessments, do a mini interview with someone of on our research team, and receive feedback on the impressions you made during your interview by a trained evaluator. You will receive this feedback while in an MRI scanner so that we can see how your brain is responding to receiving this feedback. Additionally, you will be asked to complete a variety of short questionnaires. The study session will last approximately 3 hours and you will receive $75 for your time.

2. How do I know if I am eligible?

Please take this brief survey to see if you’re eligible to participate HERE!

3. WherE does this study takes place

This in-person session for this study will take place at the Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC) on UNC’s medical school campus — it is housed within the Marsico Hall building. The address is: .

4. How do i get to the biomedical research imaging center?

There are lots of ways to travel to the BRIC! You can drive and we can provide you with free parking for the duration of your study visit. You can also use one of the following bus routes, which will drop you off right outside Marsico Hall

Chapel Hill Transit Bus Lines: CL, D, G, NS, S, T

GoTriangle Transit Bus Lines: 400, 420, 800, 805

6. WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS RESEARCH?

You may not be the direct beneficiary of the knowledge gained from this study, but the scientific community will benefit from knowing more about the neural mechanisms involved in processing social information about ourselves from others. Additionally, given our goal of increasing the diversity of our research samples, this study will help to increase representation in science.

7. WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF MY PARTICIPATION?

There are no known risks to participation in this study. However, those with metal implants, piercings that cannot be removed, or other permanent metal objects in or attached to their body should not have an MRI.

8. ARE MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI) SCANS DANGEROUS?

There are no known risks of MRI scans when guidelines are followed. Given that MRI scanners work by using high-powered magnets, those with permanent bodily metal implants or attachments should not have an MRI. Additionally, those who suffer from claustrophobia are likely to be made uncomfortable during this process. The process may make those who do not suffer from claustrophobia uncomfortable as well since the machine makes loud, banging noises. Participants will be provided earplugs and the process will stop at any point upon your request.

9. WHAT IF I DO NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE AFTER BEGINNING THE STUDY?

You may halt your participation at any point of the study for any reason and without penalty. No individual has an obligation to complete this study. If you decide to leave the study early, you will still receive compensation for your time.

10. WILL I BE COMPENSATED?

All participants will be compensated for their time and will earn $75 for full completion of the study.

11. WHO WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THE DATA COLLECTED?

No one outside of the research lab will have access to your personal information or data. Your privacy and confidentiality will be maintained by deidentification of all data, meaning that all information that could link your data back to you will be removed and disposed of. Your anonymized data will be used for this research and can be used/seen by others in the future, but no one will be able to identify you with this data.
