Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity
What this means to us:
We strive to address inequities in every domain of our academic lives. As a team of scientists, we focus on important societal issues, and use science for the betterment of people’s lives, especially for groups historically targeted for oppression in our society and in research. In addition, we acknowledge and value the power and strength within these groups. We believe it is our ethical responsibility to work toward equity within our team to address historical oppression. Diversity within our team also ensures that we create quality scientific investigations informed by researchers with rich and unique perspectives. As a lab family, we are committed to creating and preserving a welcoming, inclusive and just environment for all identities. Outside of the lab, we are dedicated to increasing representation through our mentorship, teaching, and outreach.
How we enact it:
In our research, we seek to answer scientific questions that shed light on how inequities develop and what we can do to improve outcomes.
We engage in horizontal decision-making to ensure that all voices in our lab are heard.
We participate in outreach events aimed at making science more accessible to all, particularly groups targeted for oppression.
To keep our lab accountable, we have an Equity and Inclusion leader who facilitates and regularly evaluates the lab’s efforts around equity. This includes maintaining representation within our team and developing strategies to be diverse and inclusive in our research methods.
We are involved in departmental efforts surrounding equity and inclusivity, such as serving on Diversity & Equity Subcommittees and participating in weekly anti-racist hour of action meetings in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and to address systemic oppression in our community and department.
We hold a monthly journal club for undergraduates, focused on anti-racism and psychological research pertaining to prejudice and discrimination.
